Aspirin Increases Bleeding Risk

July 20, 2012

In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers found that regular use of low-dose aspirin to prevent cardiovascular events among high-risk patients may result in an increased risk of major bleeding. This study examined administrative records of 4.1 million individuals and using a matched case-control analysis, showed that aspirin use led to a greater risk of major gastrointestinal or cerebral bleeding.  Individuals with diabetes had higher risk of bleeding, independent of aspirin use
