CMS Grants AABB as an Accrediting Organization for Laboratories Performing HLA Testing

May 23, 2014

Facilities performing human leukocyte antigen (HLA) testing for clinical use must be accredited.  The Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that HLA testing of blood donors for transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) risk reduction can be classified as either histocompatibility or general immunology.  This classification allows the AABB to be an accrediting organization.  If there are any questions concerning laboratory accreditation of HLA testing, they should be directed to the AABB accreditation department.
