Synthetic Platelets Offer Potential Benefits for Platelet-Associated Disorders

Professor Nishit Doshi and colleagues from the University of California, Santa  Barbara, the Scripps Research Institute, and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute have reported progress in developing synthetic platelets.  They synthesized platelets, imitating the size, shape, and adhesive properties, among other attributes, of mammalian platelets, and concluded that the synthetic particles were highly successful and could have major therapeutic applications.
